The first Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda and Minister for East African Community Affairs Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga has described Nyege Nyege as “mere music festival” which is the only income generating entertainment event for the people of Busoga region.
Kadaga in her veiled ‘verbal attack’ lambasted her successor who a few days ago vowed that Nyege Nyege “will not take place.”
Hon Anita Among while chairing plenary said Nyege Nyege promotes immorality and is also a breeding ground for homosexuality.
“That function will not happen,” she said arousing wild celebrations from MPs.
However, a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Hon Robinah Nabbanja and other relevant ministers okayed the fete the following but issued security and safety guidelines.
However, the Speaker later warned that no single individual in Uganda would overrun Parliament, calling the executive to do its part.
The latest powerful government official to throw her weight behind Nabbanja is Kadaga who wondered why a leader would attempt to subvert an entertainment show which was already attracted 4000 Kenyans who have filled Jinja hotels to the brim.
The former Speaker, revered in Busoga was speaking at a traditional function at the Kingdom headquarters as thousands attended the 8th coronation of Kyabazinga on Tuesday.
“4,000 tourists will come from Kenya. They are in our hotels, giving us money. About 1,500 tourists are coming in from Tanzania. About 500 will come from Rwanda. More tourists will come from South Sudan. Stop lying to people that Nyege Nyege is about immorality.”
Kadaga added “People here in Busoga have stocked flour to make chapati for tourists. Stalls are being built to sell all sorts of goods to tourists. Is it right for any leader to decampaign Nyege Nyege?”
She said only any enemy would attempt to mudsling the popular event.
Kadaga urged Kingdom subjects, “no one should stop you from attending Nyege Nyege.”
