Immigration officials have on Monday morning besieged Arirang Hotel in Uganda capital, Kampala and rounded up over 30 Chinese who were found working illegally.
They are currently held at immigration head office at Jinja road.
Ariranga Hotel and Restaurant is owned by Asians and our sources revealed that the owners sneak foreigners into the country and subject them to cheap labour because the victims are vulnerable and can’t access authorities.
Those arrested are mostly Chinese and a few Koreans.
When contacted for a comment, we were told that the madam who is allowed to speak on behalf of the hotel was not available at the moment.
“The madam who can speak on the issue is not available now, we shall get to you when she is back.”
Recently, Uganda National roads authority had to deport several Chinese workers who were found without working permits.
In February 2017, a scholar and economic development expert revealed that over 30,000 Chinese are in Uganda illegally.
Dr. David Dollar, a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy, Global Economy and Development programme at the John L. Thornton China Centre of the Brookings Institution, US, says that the influx of Chinese migrants into Uganda and other African countries is a result of global labour migration.
