The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of a private security guard accused of orchestrating a high-value theft involving gold and cash in Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect, identified as Justine Akena, was attached to Magnum Security Company and deployed to guard premises belonging to Goldex Uganda Limited along Mawanda Road.
Police say the incident occurred on April 10, 2026, when Akena allegedly stole a bag from a motor vehicle belonging to one Maggie Katuramu. The bag reportedly contained shs 29 million in cash and 900 grams of gold valued at approximately shs 500 million.
After the theft, Akena is said to have locked up the premises and gone into hiding.
However, a manhunt culminated in his arrest on April 15 at around 10:30 pm in Gaspa Village, Bweyale Town Council. Upon interrogation, police say the suspect admitted to committing the offence.
Preliminary investigations further reveal that Akena had already spent part of the stolen cash to establish a retail shop, from where he was eventually apprehended.
He is currently detained at Mawanda Road Police Station as investigations continue, with authorities preparing to formally charge and prosecute him.
Police have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on insider-related crimes, particularly those involving private security personnel entrusted with safeguarding property.
