The Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Free Eye Camp opens today in Bukedea District, with thousands of people expected to benefit from the three-day medical outreach aimed at restoring sight and improving access to specialised eye care.
The camp, organised by the Ruparelia Foundation, will run from March 27 to 29, 2026, at Bukedea Teaching Hospital, where patients will receive free eye screening, treatment, cataract surgeries and spectacles.
Organisers say the outreach is expected to benefit more than 5,000 people from Teso and neighbouring communities, many of whom have struggled for years to access affordable eye care.
Residents with poor eyesight, cataracts and other vision-related complications have been urged to turn up in large numbers and take advantage of the free services.
The camp comes days after Speaker of Parliament Anita Among donated Shs50 million towards the initiative, with part of the funds earmarked for a special “vision fund” to support patients suffering from rare and complicated eye conditions in remote areas.

Speaking during the launch of the programme earlier this week, Among said the initiative was about restoring hope to people who may have lost their sight and confidence over the years.
Businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia, Rajiv’s father, also revealed that mobile outreach clinics had already been deployed to identify and support patients in urgent need of treatment ahead of the main camp.
The outreach is being held in memory of Rajiv Ruparelia, the late businessman, rally driver and philanthropist, whose family says the programme is intended to preserve his legacy of compassion, service and community transformation.
For many families in Bukedea and beyond, the camp is expected to provide not just treatment — but a renewed chance to see, work and live better.
