Gulu City Council has resolved to name one of its major roads after the late businessman and rally driver Rajiv Ruparelia in recognition of his contribution to sports tourism and community development in Uganda.

The resolution, adopted during a special council sitting over the weekend, proposes naming the road near Pece Stadium as “Rajiv Ruparelia Road.” The council will now forward the measure to the Ministry of Local Government for approval before official signage is installed.

The development follows the Rajiv Ruparelia Memorial Rally, the sixth round of the 2025 Uganda National Rally Championship, which drew thousands of spectators to Gulu City. The two-day event, organized by the Central Motor Club, covered a total of 260.88 kilometers, including competitive stages at Noblakes and Wobbly, as well as a Super Special Stage dedicated to the late Rajiv.

Hassan Alwi of IUEA Rally Team emerged winner of the rally, while Ronald Ssebuguzi and Aine Godfrey Kaguta (Sodo) finished second and third respectively. Beyond racing, organizers launched community initiatives including the drilling of a borehole and tree planting in Gulu to honor Rajiv’s legacy.

Speaking after the council’s decision, Gulu Mayor Alfred Okwonga hailed the move as a fitting tribute.

“Rajiv believed in building communities through sport, and his energy brought life to our city. Naming this road after him is a symbol of how his legacy continues to inspire northern Uganda,” Okwonga said.

Rajiv Ruparelia, son of property mogul Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia and Jyotsna Ruparelia, was a celebrated motorsport enthusiast who passed away in May 2025. Through the Ruparelia Foundation, his family has championed youth empowerment, sports, and social programs across Uganda.

In a statement, his parents expressed deep gratitude to Gulu leaders, saying,

“This lasting honour to name a road after Rajiv is a beautiful tribute that ensures his memory lives on in the community.”
