Justice Aisha Batala is new IGG as Anne and Patricia are Retained as Deputies

Justice Aisha Batala has replaced Beti olive Kamya as IGG

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Justice Aisha Naluzze Batala as the new Inspector General of Government (IGG), replacing Beti Olive Namisango Kamya whose contract expired on September 23rd and was not renewed.

The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter) by Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Faruk Kirunda, who confirmed that the President exercised his constitutional powers to make the appointment. Kirunda added that Kamya’s former deputies, Dr. Patricia Achan Okiria and Anne Twinomugisha Muhairwe, have been retained in their positions.

“The names of the appointees have been forwarded to Parliament for vetting,” Kirunda stated, congratulating Justice Batala and the deputies upon their appointments.

Justice Batala’s appointment comes just days after Kamya and her deputies vacated office following the expiry of their four-year contracts.

Kamya, who took over from Justice Irene Mulyagonja in 2021, had lobbied for renewal, but the President did not extend her tenure.

Her term at the helm of the Inspectorate was marked by controversy, with critics accusing her of failing to act firmly on major corruption scandals. Several officials implicated in graft were reportedly allowed to refund stolen public funds instead of facing prosecution, drawing public criticism toward the institution’s effectiveness.

Justice Batala, a respected member of the judiciary, is expected to restore public confidence in the Inspectorate and reinvigorate Uganda’s fight against corruption. Her appointment has been widely welcomed as a chance for reform within one of the country’s most scrutinized accountability bodies.

Parliament is expected to vet the new appointee in the coming days before she officially assumes office.
