A fresh political wave is beginning to sweep across Busiro East Constituency as Andrew Kiryowa, a youthful lawyer and former District Youth Chairman for Wakiso, has officially declared his bid to unseat long-serving Member of Parliament, Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona of the National Unity Platform (NUP), in the 2026 general elections.

Kiryowa, a practicing Advocate of the High Court and Partner at Alto Advocates, a prominent Kololo-based law firm, says his decision is driven by the desire to offer Busiro East a new brand of leadership — one that is visible, accessible, and development-focused.

“I am not in this race for noise or popularity. I am here to serve. Busiro East deserves active representation that prioritizes people’s needs over political showmanship,” Kiryowa said in a recent statement.

Having officially entered the contest through the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, Kiryowa has already paid the shs 3 million nomination fee for the NRM primaries. He also cleared shs 600,000 to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) for academic verification, signaling his full compliance with electoral requirements and transparency in his documentation.

Though a new entrant in parliamentary politics, Kiryowa is no stranger to leadership.

As former Wakiso District Youth Chairman, he is credited for initiating programs that uplifted young people through entrepreneurship and civic education.

His supporters describe him as articulate, focused, and grounded in both the law and community work.

The incumbent, Medard Ssegona, a seasoned lawyer and staunch NUP figure, has held the Busiro East seat for over a decade.

While Ssegona remains a vocal opposition figure on the national stage, critics argue that his visibility in the constituency has waned over the years.

Kiryowa, however, insists his campaign is not a personal attack but a call for “fresh, practical, and present leadership.” He is also openly aligned with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a growing political movement led by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, which has been gaining traction among younger voters.

With the NRM primaries fast approaching, political observers will be watching closely to see whether this young legal mind can galvanize the grassroots and take on the political weight of one of NUP’s most senior figures.

“Omwana Atumwa,” reads his campaign slogan in Luganda — “The child has been sent.”
