The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has strongly condemned the abduction of Retired Major Ronald Iduli, a prominent lawyer and respected member of the legal fraternity.

In an urgent press statement released today, the ULS called the incident a blatant attempt to intimidate legal practitioners and undermine the justice system.

Iduli, who was representing opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obed Kamulegeya, was set to appear before the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) General Court Martial in Makindye, Kampala, this morning.

However, he was reportedly abducted from his home in Bulenga, Wakiso District, at around 4:00 AM.

“This brazen invasion of Ronald’s home is a blatant attempt to intimidate and silence our member and, by extension, the entire legal profession,” read the statement signed by Isaac K. Ssemakadde, President of the Uganda Law Society.

The ULS demanded that authorities act swiftly to ensure Iduli’s safe release and bring the perpetrators of this act to justice. Specifically, they urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and UPDF authorities to launch a thorough investigation into the matter and provide a detailed report.

The incident has drawn widespread concern within the legal community and beyond, as it highlights the growing risks faced by lawyers defending opposition figures in politically sensitive cases. The ULS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and safety of its members, stating, “We will not stand idly by while our colleagues are harassed and intimidated. We will fight for our rights and fight for justice.”

The society also called upon the public to report any suspicious activities to their toll-free line, emphasizing that ensuring the safety of all citizens remains a top priority.

The abduction of Iduli comes at a critical time as the cases involving Besigye and Kamulegeya continue to draw national and international attention. Many observers believe the move is an attempt to weaken the defense team in these high-profile proceedings.

The Uganda Law Society’s swift and public condemnation of the incident is seen as a bold stance against increasing threats to the independence of the judiciary and legal profession. As investigations unfold, the legal community and the public await further developments with growing apprehension.
