In a significant move aimed at restoring one of Uganda’s key infrastructure assets, the Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, has announced the closure of the Karuma Bridge to all traffic starting Monday, September 23rd, 2024. The closure will allow contractors to begin the demolition of the concrete deck as part of major restoration works that are expected to last three months.
The Karuma Bridge, a critical link between the northern and western parts of the country, has been in dire need of repair, and the government has decided to take action to ensure its long-term safety and functionality.
During the closure, the Ministry of Works and Transport has provided several alternative routes to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and minimal disruption:
Motorists from Kampala to Gulu/West Nile: Travelers are advised to use the Luwero—Kafu—Masindi—Paraa route, which passes through Murchison Falls National Park. From there, they can connect to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo.
Motorists to Lira: Two options are available. The first is the Rwenkunye—Apac route via the Masindi Port Ferry. The second option is the Iganga—Nakalama—Tirinyi—Pallisa—Kumi—Soroti—Lira route, which can also be used by motorists from Lira heading back to Kampala.
The Ministry has urged all motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and follow the provided alternative routes to avoid inconvenience. Authorities will monitor the traffic flow on these detours to ensure a smooth transition throughout the restoration period.
With Karuma Bridge being a vital link to the northern region, this restoration work is expected to greatly improve the structural integrity and safety of the bridge, ensuring its continued service for years to come.
