Rt. Hon. Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, sent a condolence message to Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Uganda, in connection with the terrorist attack in Mpondwe, Kasese district.
The barbaric attack by ADF rebels who are affiliated to Islamic State left 42 people dead of which 37 were children and 6 abducted.
The hot pursuit of the terrorists by UPDF soldiers has seen 3 students who were kidnapped rescued.
It is with deep sadness and pain that the members of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation have learned about the terrorist attack on the school in Mpondwe. The merciless killing of the innocent children is a crime that will never be forgiven. I am convinced that the attackers and organizers will not escape the deserved punishment,” writes Valentina Matviyenko.
In a rare-show of solidarity, the Russian Speaker added that, “In this difficult hour I send words of support to you and all Ugandan citizens, as well as my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims.”
The communication follows a cordial visit by Russian Ambassador Vladlen Semivolos to Anita Among, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, to discuss practical issues of bilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation on June 20.
Mr Semivolos had previously met Special Presidential Advisor Gen.Muhoozi Kainerugaba to discuss “pressing bilateral matters of cooperation between Russia and Uganda.”
Not so long ago, President of Uganda, Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni indicates that Uganda and Russia were enjoying a “friendly and mutual relationship.”
