The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Janes Frances Abado has Tuesday withdrawn all criminal proceedings against the Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere of Rwenzururu, and 217 others.
The accused have been battling charges of murder, treason and aggravated robbery in the Courts of law.
Jacquelyn Okui, the DPP’s spokesperson confirmed the development saying her worship Abado acted within the law.
“DPP is empowered under the constitution to discontinue criminal proceedings instituted by the DPP’s office against the accused person before court delivers judgement,” he said.
“So by dropping charges against the accused the DPP has acted within the law.”
Ms Okui said Mumbere and the co-accused had applied for amnesty and granting them freedom, the DPP has facilitated the process.
“In this particular matter the accused applied to the amnesty commission and the applications were submitted to the DPP for consideration and she found out the applications qualify for amnesty. So she is facilitating the amnesty process.”
The king was arrested on November 27, 2016 following UPDF-led operations in the Rwenzori region that culminated in the attack on his palace.
The king was airlifted, tried and imprisoned in Jinja before he was granted bail on January 13, 2017.
He applied for bail pointing out that he had a constitutional right to bail. He added that he had substantial sureties who were willing to stand for him and that he has fixed places of abode in Makindye, Kampala and Muyenga Cell, Nyakabingo II in Kasese district.
His movement until today has also been restricted to the districts of Kampala, Wakiso and Jinja during the period of his trial.
