The cost of renovating Mandela national stadium (Namboole) can be used to construct and complete two other stadiums.
This was revealed by accounting officer of National Council of Sports (NCS) while appearing before an Ad-hoc committee of Parliament chaired by Hon Laura Kanushu tasked to investigate operations of the NCS following inconsistencies in statements regarding release of funds to the sub sector.
The NCS secretary general Dr. Patrick B. Ogwel, appeared at Parliament along with State Minister for Sports Patrick Ogwang.
Accordingly the Hon Ogwang and Ogwel contradicted each other on mismanaged funds.
Ogwel who is also the accounting officer by the virtue of his office reported that over shs 40 billion has been released for Namboole works contrary yet Ogwang said government had released shs 291 billion which caused delayed Olympic team funding.
However, former Minister of Sports Hamson Obua had earlier said that after the completion of the perimeter wall, UPDF Engineering Brigade which is handling the works will embark on phase two which will be the renovation of the stadium. He said that Parliament had approved a budget allocation of Shillings 67 Billion towards the renovation of the stadium effective next financial year.
The committee chaired by Hon. Laura Kanushu was named by the Speaker, Anita Among after a motion was moved by Hon. Asuman Basalirwa during the plenary sitting on Thursday, 10 November 2022.
