Without mentioning names, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said a number of Ugandan security officials had hatched a plan to lead UPDF into war with Rwanda for selfish gain.

He added that, however, the conspiracy suffered stillbirth when the Commander in Chief (CiC) appointed him Commander of Land Forces.

Rwandan leader Gen Paul Kagame closed border with Uganda in 2018 after relations between the two countries deteriorated.

The two nations accused each other of espionage. Rwanda further claimed that Uganda was harbouring elements that wanted to overthrow Kagame.

A number of Rwandan agents were arrested in Uganda but later released and repatriated to Kigali.

Diplomatic efforts to warm relations by both countries had failed until Muhoozi stepped in and his first meeting with President Kagame saw the border reopened after four years.

“There was a terrible conspiracy amongst some people in the security services that wanted us to go to war with our brothers in Rwanda. Their biggest catastrophe is that President Kaguta Museveni appointed me CLF. Once I discovered this conspiracy, I reported to the President,” Muhoozi tweeted on Monday.

He has been highly praised by citizens of both nations for taking a step into resolving the Rwanda- Uganda conflict.

Rwandan President two weeks ago visited Uganda to attend Muhoozi’s birthday.

In his speech he said he was happy to return after a number of years.
