President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has told the NRM caucus how he has never backed Jacob Oulanyah or Rebecca Kadaga for speakership but rather supports the decision of the party.

Museveni is the chairman of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) a highest decision making organ of the ruling party.

On Sunday under his supervision, CEC endorsed Hon Jacob Oulanyah as the party’s choice for Speaker.

In protest the outgoing Speaker Hon Rebecca Kadaga vowed to contest on Independent ticket.

The election is slated for Monday, May 24, 2021 at Kololo Independence grounds.

The NRM caucus ratified the decision of CEC as MPs await to vote on Monday.

The party also voted for Hon Anita Among who will contest for Deputy Speaker.

Museveni while addressing CEC and NRM caucus as he closed the one-day event said for him he never supports individuals but rather follows what the party decides.

He said the party is bigger than the will of individuals.

He cautioned Oulanyah to fight to win Monday’s vote insisting that CEC and NRM caucus had done their part.

“If they defeat you, that is your problem,” Museveni said.

The President made the statement after Rebecca Kadaga vowed to run as an independent candidate.

“I have never supported Oulanyah or Kadaga. For me it’s about the party,” Museveni said.

He urged Oulanyah to make robust mobilization to win tomorrow’s election.

For one to be declared speaker, he or she needs to have 290 votes.
