Shakira Supar Kaweesa who drowned on River Nile along with her daughter Miya Alwi was a wife to Hassan Alwi (senior) the father of Hassan Alwi a rally driver.
Alwi (senior) is the owner of International University of East Africa and is commonly addressed as Chairman.
This development puts to rest a series of unclear reports regarding the relationship the deceased had with the ‘Alwis’.
“She was the chairman’s wife,” an official at the university told this website.
Alwi and his wife were among the four tourists whose boat got carried into Kiira Dam spillways by the river current at a time water had been flushed through the gates.
Eskom Limited, a firm managing the dam said in a statement that the boat got an engine failure before the accident happened.
The body of Shakira Kaweesa had been retrieved by UPDF marine and the search for daughter’s body is still underway.
After the accident on Sunday night, several reports circulated widely on social media suggesting that Shakira was wife to Hassan Alwi (junior), a rally driver.
But controversy shrouded Shakira’s relationship after another man identified as Mukiibi Serunjogi posted on social media mourning the untimely death of Shakira whom he described as “love of my life.”
But those known to the two say, they have been best friends.
The controversy was further fueled by a picture of Alwi (junior) with a lady of Pakistan origin believed to be his wife.
This generated questions among the members of the public who wondered if Shakira had been married to the rally driver.
The university which Alwi owns has since issued a statement regarding the health status of the director.
