Two opposition lawmakers Paul Mwiru and Gerald Karuhanga have Tuesday crossed to Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), a new political party founded by former army commander Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu.
Muntu, formed ANT last year shortly after quitting Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) which he led as president for five years.
His departure was triggered by failure to consolidate his leadership in a party that is hugely dominated by extremists who rejected Muntu’s political approach referring to him as a boardroom politician.
However, a section of FDC members subscribed to his method of grass root mobilization visa vie street aggression.
Among the legislators who believed in Muntu are Jinja East MP Paul Mwiru and Gerald Karuhanga, an Independent MP but FDC leaning.
On Tuesday they swore their allegiance to Muntu and the ANT leadership as they were unveiled at a news conference.
“It’s a great honor to be with ANT because I want to form part of the new future which puts people first. I’m in ANT from today officially by choice and wilt” Mwiru said.
“The big task ahead requires an organized group with a conscious and consistent way to make a contribution and turn around this country. And this is what I have come to do”.
ANT has since chosen Muntu as its flagbearer for 2021 Presidential elections.
“To the younger generation, we are faced with a burden and we are Lucky to be around at this time. It’s not by mistake that we are the ones with the energies to transform our county. This isn’t the time to cool off but to marshal all our energies to turn around our country,” Hon Karuhanga remarked.
Gen. Muntu’s political tolerance has earned him immense respect across the political divide, with majority of the members of the public maintaining that he can suitably succeed hia former Commander in Chief Gen. Yoweri Museveni as NRM establishment continues to battle succession challenge.
