Makerere Promotes 61 Academic Staff

Makerere University has promoted a total of 61 academic staff drawn from the different schools and colleges to professor, associate professor, senior lecturer and lecturer levels.

The promotions, according to the University publication, have taken place in an academic process following a decision of a special meeting held on May 14, 2020.

A total of six associate professors have been elevated to full professor.

These include Professors Christopher Mbaziira from Human Rights and peace center, Evan Steven Makara from Political Science and Public Administration, Florence Mutoni Dujang from Physics, Daniel Kabonge Kaye Obstetrics and Gynecology, Byarugaba Rukooko from Philosophy and Development Studies and Fred Bakabulindi East African School of Higher Education Studies and Development.

Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe says the promotions are a major boost to graduate training.

Those who attained a new rank of associate Professorship are Esther Buregyeya, Benjamin Kanagwa, Angelo Kakande, and Betty Kwagala.

The University also elevated a total of 19 lecturers to senior lecturer.

These include Alice Tuyizere, Badru Kukenya, John James Okiror, Denis Muhangi, Geoffrey Ismail Mirumbe, Gyaviira Musoke Genza, Aane Marie Nassali, William Tayebwa, Robert B.D Otto, Edgar Nabutanyi, Eriab Moses Nkamba, and David Lubogo.

Others are; Timothy Tebenkana, Sylivia Angubua Baluka, Peter Nabusiu Walekhwa, Firiminus Mugumya, Peter Akoll, Sylvester katuromunda and Kenneth Nnyombi.

According to the list, a batch of 31 assistant lecturers was also promoted to the lecturer level.

These are; Francis Mugizi, Moses N Kayembe, Erumus Erebu Okello, Scovia Mablinda Nalugo, Annet Eva Zawedde, Gertrude Ayugi, Jamidah Nakato, Jude Thaddeo Mugarura, Festo Nyende Tusubira, Aisha Nyanti, Ivan Nathanael Lukanda, Fred Kaooza, and Innocent M. Musengo.

Amon Ashaba Mwiine, Caesar Jjingo, Odoch Terence Amoki, Samuel Ponsiano Wamala, Patricia Ndugga, Kirum Gozaga Gonza, Denis Nseka, Isaac Mugume, Saul Daniel Ddumba, Henry Ampeire Kariisa, Juliet Nakakawa, Bob Mali, Hannington Wasswa, Fredrick Immanuel Kendi, Enock Ssekuubwa, Stephen Odongo Eyobu, Cosmos Mwikirize and Eliab Mughambu Muhindo were all elevated to lecturer level as the university seeks.

Makerere remains top with the highest number of highly qualified academic staff in the country.

According to URN, other Public Universities such as Muni University has only one Professor, who is also the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Christine Dranzoa, while Kyambogo University has only three professors currently.
