Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) Commander has Tuesday justified sealing off Kisekka Market saying the heavy police deployment in downtown Kampala in normal and it’s done in various parts of the city.
Moses Kafeero was responding to queries from this website as to why Police cordoned off Kisekka Market denying mechanics access contrary to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s directive to reopen garages and metal works while easing on the lockdown.
Kisekka Market is popularly known for selling spare parts and repairing cars in Kampala.
But to Kafeero, Kisekka is not a home of garages but rather spare parts shops.
He said, there are no registered garages in Kisekka.
“Garages are known having been licenced by KCCA as garages and those will work
We carefully follow the President’s Directives and we are sober as he reads them out,” Kafeero responded.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango said traders of Kiseka market misunderstood the President’s directive.
“As we continue 2 enforce the Presidential orders, we are paying keen interest in areas that may have misunderstood the directives eg Kisekka market. These are spare part shops & not garages. Makeshift repairers by the road side are illegal and unlicensed by KCCA,” Mr Onyango said.
Cordoning off Kisekka market draws more frustration among the operators in this area who entirely depend on selling spare parts and repairing cars.
The public welcomed Museveni’s 14-day lockdown with more anger and despair since majority of the population is categorized as “hand to mouth existence.”
