Family Speaks out on Kasekende’s ‘Retirement’

Dr. Kasekende

The family of Dr. Louis Kasekende has spoken out on the fate of the Central Bank Deputy Governor after his contract expired last Friday forcing him into early retirement.

Kasekende, 61, has served Bank of Uganda for three terms and until yesterday (Friday) he was deputizing Governor Emmanuel Mutebile.

A close family member who spoke to this website on condition of anonymity for fear of reprimand said, Mr. Kasekende is now considered retired.

“As far as we know he is retired,” said a family member adding that unless the appointing authority who is the President decides to offer him a fourth term.

“It is up to the appointing authority. So we wait and see.”

Mr. Kasekende’s career has been damaged by allegations of dirty dealings in the closure of defunct banks.

Kasekende on numerous occasions was cited by a number of investigators in the illegal sale or closure of five private owned banks.

His name was mentioned by the Auditor General and Parliament’s investigative committee- COSASE as having a hand in failing these financial institutions.

Asked what is the family’s position on Kasekende’s push to have his term extended, this insider said, “we don’t want him to seek renewal. He can do better somewhere.”

The family is concerned that Kasekende’s job is surrounded by politics yet he is a technical person.

“He is a technician not a politician,” an insider said.

By press time neither government nor the Presidency had pronounced itself on Kasekende’s fate.

The Ministry of Finance, a custodian of Bank of Uganda earlier said it was waiting for a directive from the Presidency.

But reports indicate that several officials including former ministers, clerics and powerful government top shots had intervened to save Kasekende.

Our efforts to talk to Kasekende remained unsuccessful by the time of filing this report. He couldn’t respond to our Whatsapp queries even though he saw them.
