President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has given green light the controversial Miss Curvy Competition that has stirred anxiety among a section of women activists across the country.
Whereas these angry activists perceive the initiative as immoral, the President said it was “creative” of the young people who came up with that idea.
A few days ago, junior Tourism Minister Godfrey Kiwanda launched Miss Curvy Contest designed by Ann Mungooma, as a means of promoting Uganda.
However, sentiments peddled by those who feel offended say, the competition is aiming at demeaning a woman’s dignity by exposing her “sexual features” which turns to be unscrupulous.
But on Thursday, during a news conference at State House Museveni hailed the mastermind of the contest as “creative.”
Below are Museveni’s quotes while responding to Miss Curvy Contest.
“We should talk silently and sympathetically to these young people, they must have thought if beauty is good how about structural beauty. I suspect this was their simple way of thinking.”
“We were encouraging Miss Uganda Quiin Abenakyo to market Uganda. If we do that are we right? Only slim girls. What we should ask is, should our children be involved in exploitative appearance. We should discuss whether appearances are an issue.”
“I suspect when Abenakyo won beauty contest Mungooma said if beauty is selling point for world, why not us. We should talk to them and advise quietly.”
“We may have made a mistake to appreciate Miss Uganda resulting into Miss Curvy. How do we explain why Nalulungi is alright and Nabitege is not. Should our children be involved in exploitative appearance.”
