Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Monday flew to Sudan capital, Khartoum in a bid to end grueling conflict in the neighboring South Sudan.

Museveni, who is among the eldest leaders on the continent held talks with his counterpart Salva Kiir.

The negotiations aim at ending the war instigated by Riek Machar, who staged a coup on Kiir’s government some years ago.

The two were close associates before they fell out.

Museveni held his meeting alongside Sudan President Omar Al Bashir.

He further addressed The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) summit hosted in Khartoum.

Local online publication Chimpreports earlier Monday reported the meeting will surprise many considering Machar and Kiir had earlier failed to agree on a political settlement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the aegis of host President Abiy Ahmed Ali.

“During the meeting, Machar said for any meaningful dialogue to take place, it should be within the context of a compressive politics settlement for guns to fall silent,” adds Chimpreports.

For many times, negotiations to end the war ravaging one of the poorest and young nations in Africa- South Sudan have collapsed with Riek Machar snubbing several meetings, thus disappointing the mediators who have labeled him ‘unserious.’
