Security deployed heavily on Sunday night in Arua town to combat chaotic scenes orchestrated by a section of residents who had planned to bar police from accessing home of fallen NRM lawmaker Ibrahim Abiriga.

The locals who demanded to carry the body of their leader from Arua airstrip turned violent and vandalised cars and property at Abiriga’s native home.

They beat up police officers and journalists.

As the infuriated crowds pounced on security personnel, it prompted UPDF to deploy its elite unit SFC in town to quell the protests.

Curfew was launched in town and several arrests made to those perceived to have led the protest.

Whereas the residents had blocked Abiriga’s family members from Kampala from attending the funeral, police would later restore sanity.

Currently the burial arrangements are ongoing after residents accepted to make queues to view their leader’s body for the last time. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to be the chief mourner.
