The chairman of Electoral Commission (EC) Justice Simon Byabakama Mugyenyi has revealed that his administration needs shs 7 billion to successfully organise LC1 and LC2 elections.

Addressing the media on Tuesday at the head offices in Kampala, Byabakama said the commission had been facilitated with enough money last year from government but the budget was affected by the Court Order that saw a subsequent postponement of the exercise.

“The commission had already recruited some staff to work on the exercise   countrywide and we were using part of the 15 billion. Currently if the commission is to conduct the same election program, then we need extra cash of about Shs7 billion to close the financing gap,” said the EC head.

He further indicated that the commission is ready to conduct elections in the newly created municipalities, town councils and sub-counties across the country.

The posts to be filled in include those of the Municipality Mayor, Municipal Members of Parliament, LCV chairpersons, both direct and special group’s councillors, and workers’ councillors.

The whole exercise will cost the commission about Shs6.7 billion.
