Fresh elections as Musumba wins Court petition

FDC's Musumba

Electoral Commission (EC) has today successfully nominated two candidates Salaam Musumba (FDC) and her rival Hajati Rehema Watongola who are vying for Kamuli district woman MP seat.

The vacancy occurred when the Court of Appeal nullified the election of Watongola as she lacked academic papers.

As required by law the statutory deadline for conducting a Parliamentary by-election is sixty (60) days after notification from Clerk to Parliament on the occurrence of the vacancy.

EC therefore set nomination of candidates for today 23rd and tomorrow Friday 24th March 2017, at the Office of the Returning Officer in Kamuli Municipality.

“ Kamuli Municipality MP by elections update;  day 1 sees Hajjat watongola (NRM) and Proscovia Salaam Musumba (FDC) successfully nominated. Nominations close tomorrow Friday,” EC spokesman Jotham Taremwa confirmed to TrumpetNews.

The nomination will be followed by a period of six (6) days,  during which members of the general public will have access to the candidates’ nomination papers, and will be able to lodge complaints, if any, on suitability of the candidates to contest in the by-election.

Campaign meetings shall be held for a period of fifteen (15) days, that is, from Monday 27th March until Monday 10th April 2017.

Polling shall take place on Wednesday 12th April 2017 at all polling stations in Kamuli Municipality, and (polling) shall start at 7:00am and close at 4:00pm.
