UPC issues guidelines for EALA polls

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) cabinet has today sat to discuss how to manage the incoming East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) elections. The meeting sat at Uganda House and was chaired by the party president Hon Jimmy Akena.

The agenda of the meeting has been, Election/nomination of UPC EALA Candidate”.

The meeting resolved that aspiring candidates should provide the Party Electoral Commission withall necessary information and materials.

Prospective candidates were required to collect and submit this nomination forms  beginning at 9am on 27th Jan’17 and closing today at 3pm.

The collection and submission of a nomination form must have been undertaken in person, by the prospective candidate, from the office of the Secretary General, at Party Headquarters 6th Floor Uganda House.

Upon submission  the aspiring candidate was required  attach originalcash receipt of anon-refundable fee of UGX 300,000/= (three hundred thousand shillings only) issued by the PartyAccountant.

Timetable

27thJanuary to 30th January 2017, Party Electoral Commission (PEC) shall distribute and receive back applications for candidature from aspiring EALA candidates.

27th Jan’17 to 5th February ’17, period allotted for Party EALA candidates to canvass for EALA endorsement within the Party College.

28th to 30th Jan’17, PECshall process applications from aspiring EALA Candidates.

30thJan’17, convening of Cabinet meetingto conduct vettingexercise ofUPCEALA Candidates.

05thFebruary 2017, the UPC Parliamentary Group will convene as a college to conduct primaries to nominate one UPC EALA candidate.

06thFebruary 2017 the Secretary General submits the name of UPC EALA Candidate to the Speaker of Parliament

There has been hullabaloo circulating that the Akena Administration had ring fenced EALA seat to incumbent Chris Opoka.
