Kavuma injunction: EC to take stern action against lawyer Sabiiti

Sabiiti

The top management of Electoral Commission (EC) has today morning summoned its lawyer Eric Sabiiti to answer what was his intention of lodging a petition in Constitution Court blocking parliament from investigating, questioning or inquiring into oil cash bonus payment.

As a lawyer, Sabiiti said it was illegal for Parliament to debate on a matter that is before Court calling sub judice and contempt of Court.

A senior official at EC who attended the management meeting told TrumpetNews this evening that some members of the Parliament were trying to link Sabiiti’s decision to the commission yet it was his independent judgement. However, they questioned why he couldn’t consult before petitioning Court.

“We sat today morning to discuss Eric’s issue because the public might think EC is involved,” an official who preferred to be anonymous said. Adding that,  Sabiiti was out of order and procedurally wrong.

“Therefore the meeting decided that he files his defence tomorrow and appears before the management for stern action against him,” said the official.

When contacted for a comment, EC publicist Jotham Taremwa denied knowledge of the summons but confirmed the management meeting sat as a usual routine of the commission.

Sabiiti’s individual decision puts EC in a fix as government organisation particularly at a time when opposition members continue to condemn the commission as biased only serving the regime’s interests
