Besigye meets Akufo

Uganda’s powerful opposition leader Col Kizza Besigye, a four time presidential hopeful was last Saturday among the 6000 guests who attended Ghana’s new President  Nana Akufo-Addo’s inauguration in Accra.

Besigye flew to Accra on Friday and was received at the airport by by Peter Mac Manu, the Chairman of New Patriotic Party (NPP) which won the presidential elections.  Akufo defeated incumbent President John Mahama in last month’s election.

However, the NPP opted to extend the invitation to FDC heavy weight  rather than his rival President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

The invite aroused an aura of excitement among FDC and Besigye’s supporters who immediately took to their social media pages saying the invite was an indication that he is recognized world wide as Uganda’s legitimate leader.

But Besigye’s name was not read anywhere as among the invited guests during the swearing in ceremony.

The NRM supporters thus  fired back by circulating pictures of of dignitaries who attended the function with Besigye missing. They  questioned if he was officially invited or ‘he is in the habit of inviting himself.’

But yesterday Besigye was among President Akufo’s guests whom he hosted for a luncheon at his country  home in Eastern Province Ghana.

Ronald Muhinda, Besigye’s press secretary said the two politicians held bilateral talks, “President Nana Akufo-Addo meeting  Kizza-Besigye for bilateral talks at the presidential palace in Ghana. They held talks on many issues.”
