Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises’s (COSASE), head Hon Abdu Katuntu has defended his stay in office as ‘legal.’
However, he told Parliament that his committee has never asked for extension of term of office as claimed by fellow members in FDC party.
Katuntu opened up on Tuesday morning as probe into Bank of Uganda resumed.
Katuntu added that he has never asked Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to extend his term.
The committee’s current tenure ends on January 13, 2019 but the Speaker recommended extension of its office period to February 20, 2019 to allow “effective conclusion of the BoU probe.”
A committee member Hon Moses Kasibante earlier tasked Katuntu to substantiate on reports that he had secretly met Kadaga to extend his tenure.
“It is not to do with social media but the speaker said it you who went and asked for an extension. We would like to know the basis of this,”Kasibante requested.
In his reponse, Bugweri County lawmaker denied ever meeting the speaker for more time but said he only reported to her about the progress of the Bank of Uganda probe.
“It is not true we went to speaker to ask for extension but like it is with serious committees, I went to speaker as head of this institution and briefed her of how far we had gone with the investigations,” Katuntu said.
He maintained that his committee is legally in office.
His clarifications comes after his party FDC threatened to drag the speaker to Court accusing her of overstepping her mandate by extending Katuntu’s term of office.
