On Monday, social media was all praise for the action of a police officer who was filmed saving a baby as security battled rioters in Kampala.
The riots broke out in Kiseka Market, downtown Kampala and quickly spread across the city centre.
At Nasser road, one of the busiest areas, rioters lit bonfires, waved placards and chanted slogans as they protested the continued detention of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine in a military installation.
Quelling the protests, security fired bullets and volleys of teargas.
It is at this point that a very young baby was caught in the line of fire.
The baby’s mother had reportedly fled the scene after security began dispersing the crowds with teargas and bullets.
Sensing danger to this abandoned baby, a cop came for its rescue.
The police officer’s pictures began running viral on internet and Ugandans showered him with praises for expressing compassion while on duty.
Ladies and gentlemen we bring you details of this cop who is identified as Ivan Nduhura, hailing from Rwerere , Kigarama, Rukungiri District.
Ivan is a law graduate from Nkumba University and currently heads police operations at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.
At 29, he joined the force 2 years ago and after training as a cadet officer, Ivan was deployed to Wilson road police post as Officer in Charge (OC).
Ivan worked around the clock to find the baby’s mother who showed up in the early hours of Tuesday morning (2am) to pick her son.
Born to John Tumwine and Catherin Tumwine, this praised officer attended Kabwoma primary school, Mbarara army, Nakasongora army and Seeta High School where he finished his A’ level.
His mother Catherine Tumwine is the current mayor of Rwerere Town Council.
