The construction of the largest Sewerage treatment plant in East Africa is substantially complete with 95% of the civil and electro-mechanical works completed in the Bugolobi Nakivubo Catchment area.
As the project nears completion, major pipe interconnection works along sections of Entebbe road i.e (opposite Shoprite and the Kampala Fire Brigade) will be affected to allow for the interconnection works.
Stakeholders led by the Uganda Police, NWSC Projects and Capital Development team, KCCA and the contractor Sogea Satom visited the two sites.
According to Project Engineer Eng Geoffrey Kasirikale, the works will take approximately 18days. The contractor Sogea Satom and Consultants GKW have constructed an alternative road near Goods shade to ease traffic flow.
Ag Commissioner of Traffic Police Sarah Kibwika assured the public that the Uganda Police will appropriately manage traffic during this time.
“We have designed alternative routes and sourced for enough man power to control the traffic.” she said
NWSC PR manager Mr Apedel Samuel shared that pipeline being built is part of an associated network that will transport over 45 million litres of waste water daily (including water from the heavily polluted Nakivubo channel) to the new Nakivubo Sewage treatment plant, the largest sewage treatment plant in East and Central Africa.
Apedel added that the plant will also help to clean Kampala city and the environment by diverting and treating water from the heavily polluted Nakivubo channel before releasing water into the Lake Victoria.
He added that the plant will serve the needs of 850,000 people.
The project encompasses an ultra-modern sewerage treatment plant in Bugolobi, a sewerage pre-treatment plant in Kinawataka, a sewerage pumping station on Kibira road and 31km of sewer network.
Project engineer Eng Geoffrey Kasirakale shared that the new plant will serve Naguru, Ntinda, Nakawa, Bugolobi, Kyambogo, Kiwanataka, Banda, Kasokoso, Butabika and neighbouring areas. This substantially extends piped sewerage services outside the Central Business District, Old Kampala, Kiseka Market area, Kololo, Nakasero etc.
The Bugolobi-Nakivubo sewerage plants comes after the commissioning of the Lubigi sewerage treatment plant in 2014. Lubigi serves Mulago Makerere, Wandegeya, Bwaise, Kalerwe, Lubigi Kawempe and the neighbouring areas. Plans are underway to construct a sewerage treatment plant in Nalukolongo and Kajjansi to serve the growing needs of Kampala city.
