Aria Kirabo Migadde, a 1 year and 3 months old girl suffers from mitral valve disease and requires an operation to save her life. She has been attended to at AAR Entebbe for the past 6 months however her condition is still critical.
The mitral valve is located in the left side of your heart between two chambers: the left atrium and left ventricle. The valve works to keep blood flowing properly in one direction from the left atrium to the left ventricle. It also prevents blood from flowing backward.
Mitral valve disease occurs when the mitral valve doesn’t work properly, allowing blood to flow backward into the left atrium. As a result, the heart does not pump enough blood out of the left ventricular chamber to supply your body with oxygen-filled blood.
“This can cause symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath. However, many people with mitral valve disease experience no symptoms. If left untreated, mitral valve disease can lead to serious, life-threatening complications such as heart failure or irregular heartbeats, called arrhythmias,” explained Dr Nazziwa Rose, AAR Entebbe Clinic.
