Uganda will this year celebrate the International Youth Day at Kampiringisa, Mpigi District on 12th August.This year’s theme is dubbed ‘Safe Spaces for youth’.
The Government through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development will be joining the rest of the world to celebrate the International Youth Day in accordance with the UN General Assembly resolution 54/120 of the 1999’.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry Of Gender, Labour and Social Development, Pius Bigirimana, says the day provides an opportunity for Uganda and the rest of the world to focus and reflect on issues affecting the youth and the various interventions being made in respect to them.
“The youths are paramount to development in any country. Uganda is no exception. We have been focusing on empowering the youth by putting up number of interventions, one of these is the Youth Livelihood Programme. We have made a lot of progress in this area,” Bigirimana said.
The youths in Uganda remain the most challenged group due to high unemployment rates.
The government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender has put in place deliberate programs aimed at equipping the youth with capital and skills to start up own enterprises and create jobs for themselves.
The Youth Livelihoods Program (YLP) has over the years provided substantial capital for small and medium enterprises and start-ups run mostly by youth and has been hailed as a game changer in the economic fortunes of the less fortunate youth.
