The 16th annual meeting of African Association of lawyers of Banking and Financial Institutions is ongoing since April 3, 2018, in Burundi capital, Bujumbura.
The Chairman of this high profile association Clement Ndiwimana told the local media while launching the three-day- meeting that the banking law professionals from the continent will be discussing the challenges the sector is faced with.
“Participants will have the opportunity to exchange experience and knowledge. Our institutions face the same challenges,” Iwacu, a local media outlet quotes Ndiwimana saying.
He said the disputes between banks and partners are caused by the risk of outstanding payments.
He said banking professionals sometimes bring their customers in commercial courts.
The jurist said such meetings are attended by law professionals from banks, ministry of justice, defence lawyers and notaries who propose solutions to problems their sectors are faced with.
The Burundian Minister of Justice said the meeting is timely; “it coincedes with the banking law promulgated on 22nd August 2017,” said Laurentinne Kanyana. Thus it offers a great opportunity for bankers and jurists to debate this law.
“They will exchange ideas and make recemendations that will help refine the texts of its implementations,” Kanyana said.
