Kamuli by-election to cost EC shs 219m

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announcing March 15 as the  polling date for Jinja East by-election.

The seat fell vacant after Court of Appeal this month annulled the victory of  Nathan Igeme Nabeta an NRM candidate on grounds of vote rigging as claimed by his rival Paul Mwiru (FDC).

However Court declined to declare Mwiru of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) as MP because it could not use wrong results to determine the winner of an election, thus paving way for a by-election.

Addressing the media Thursday in relation to the upcoming election, EC chairman Simon Byabakama Mugenyi said the Commission has banned fundraising activities in Jinja to enable contenders fairly participate in the race.

He further revealed the programme for the election begins on January 29 with update of voters’ register until 2nd February, there will be a stakeholders meeting on February 1 and the display of voters’register and issuance of voting location will commence on February 12 until 21st same month.

Candidates will be nominated on 13th and 14th February

Byabakama said campaigns will run from 19th to March 19.

“For avoidance of doubt, this ban takes effect from Friday 2nd February, 2018 which is the cut-off date for registration of voters and transfer of voting location in Jinja East Constituency in Jinja district and will continue until polling date,” said Justice Byabakama.

The commission is projected to spend over Shs330m for thebJinja East by-election. Jinja East Constituency currently has a total of 28,493 registered voters and 47 polling stations.
