Uganda Police has dismissed earlier reports that Sheikh Issa Wampongo was assasinated.
Police publicist Emilian Kayima on Tuesday afternoon told the media that a postmortem reveals Wampongo drowned a stream which separates Mbale and Budaka districts.
On Tuesday morning, the body of Sheikh Issa Wampongo, a teacher at Yusra primary school in Nakaloke and also a Masters student at Islamic University In Uganda was discovered laying in a stream after missing from his home on Monday.
“The postmortem report indicated that he died of drowning, “Kayima said at a news conference.
According to police, Wampongo had gone missing from his home on Monday before being discovered at around 2pm.
“On Tuesday he left home at 5am to go for prayers but was discovered in a stream at 6am.”
In the past, a number of Muslim Clerics have been killed under unknown circumstances in various areas around the country, raising concern from members of the public especially the Muslim community over the safety.
Kayima further noted that further investigations will reveal the circumstances under which the Muslim cleric drowned.
“His phone and shoes were found on the river bank as his body lay in the water. Circumstances surrounding the death will be investigated.”
He added that that there is suspicion that the deceased had a mental challenge.
