Former archbishop of Kampala archdiocese, Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala has advised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to respect the will of Ugandans and quit power.
Wamala added that all leaders in Uganda should know the time when to peacefully handover power to avoid causing bloodshed.
The ageing ‘Man of God’ made the remarks Monday at his residence in Nsambya, Kampala while delivering his Christmas message to Ugandans.
“It is very important for any leader to know when to leave in peace,” he said.
Adding: “And a leader should respect and follow what citizens want. If they ask you to go then you go.”
His advice comes against a backdrop of several calls from Ugandans supportive of Red Ribbon Campaign which is against removal of age limit.
For a while now the country is facing a political stalemate as the ruling party NRM plans to ammend the constitution to scrap age cap of 75 years to enable current leader Museveni to contest for President in the next election.
Political observers, opposition leaders, civil society activists and majority of the population believe that amending the constitution will pave way for Museveni’s life rule.
Most of the ruling party lawmakers faced hostility from the electorate as they attempted to consult as to whether the constitution should be reviewed.
