Defeated FDC leader Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu will announce his strategy Tuesday on his next course of action.
Fears were high Monday that supporters loyal to Muntu had finalised plans to exit the powerful opposition party after a hotly contested election which their candidate lost to Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) an ally of Col Kizza Besigye.
The party held elections at Namboole Stadium last Friday to vote a new leader. Muntu had sought a reelection.
In his concession speech, Muntu expressed distress for working under an environment where he is not trusted he apologised to those who think he is a mole in the party.
Consistently he has been referred to as a State agent working to crumble the FDC.
Further in his speech he indicated that there are irreconcilable differences between him and the radical faction headed by his long time archrival Besigye.
On Monday unverified reports circulated on social media that the moderate wing had indeed finished arrangements to quit FDC and will form a new party.
The deputy FDC spokesman Paul Mwiru who is attached to the moderates camp told this website that what was doing rounds on internet Monday was speculation.
“The campaign ended and whatever the result we must look at the post election aftermath. And we will act on Muntu’s guidance,” Mwiru in a low tone said.
He referred to a campaign run by their opponents as based on blackmail and fake news.
“We are in an error of fake news. And when you run such a campaign against your opponent it will suddenly affect the winner. This will affect the credibility of the new president Amuriat.”
He added that upon consultation, Muntu will give his statement on Tuesday.
Mwiru said as moderates they will give Amuriat a benefit of doubt to see how he reorganises the party in 100 days which he requested for.
“Amuriat is an individual belonging to a group that undermined the leadership of our former party president. But since we elected an indivdual and not a group we will do as he requested.”
Efforts to reach Muntu for a comment were unsuccessful as his phone couldn’t go through.
Moses Byamugisha, who also vied for the post and lost commented saying only time factor will determine if Muntu quits or not.
TrumpetNews talked to Godber Tumushabe a known civil society activist who applauded FDC practicing democracy in its electoral processes.
However, he said that FDC alone can’t win power from the regime.
“Therefore I would welcome the idea that Muntu is reaching out to so many stakeholders,” Godber said.
TrumpetNews understands that Muntu’s loyalists vowed that he must stand for President in the next election whether as in FDC or not.
“A breakaway group from FDC is almost certainly going to form a new party. The sticking point that may cause delays is that leaving the party on who’s ticket you were elected requires an MP to resign and a number of the breakaway leaders are FDC MPs,” that is the message that did rounds on internet on Monday.
