Inmates at Kireka Police station in Kira division, Wakiso district are accusing police officers incharge of the out-post of denying them food.
According to a source within the police station who preferred anonymity, the inmates have not had anything to eat for over five days now.
They also raised alarm on the deplorable health conditions at the station. They say they only have one old bucket that all of them use to relieve themselves.
TrumpetNews also learnt of other gross human rights abuses after talking to an inmate was detained at this police station but later released.
“Immediately you step into the cells, what welcomes you is the constant stench of urine and faeces,” said this inmate.
He was arrested last Sunday, upon visiting him on Tuesday he decried hunger because they hadn’t eaten anything in days.
“The officers keep telling us that there is no firewood to prepare us posho and beans,” he added.
“If you have shs 2000 then you are a king. If you are broke, then you will starve as they look on.”
On Tuesday some inmates confessed it was the 5th day since they last ate anything. Others said it was more than five days.
In the cells, there is a Kyambogo University student, name withheld, who was arrested three weeks ago for stealing shs 10 million.
This student said he has never been produced in court nor have his accusers ever surfaced again.
To his dismay, the officers at the station asked for a bribe of shs 50,000 to release him.
“The student hasn’t gotten the money. But he wonders why someone is asking for a bribe of shs 50,000 to release him if he is indeed guilty?,” Wondered the freed individual we talked to.
The Officer in Charge (OC) of the station ,Abaho denied the allegations made by the inmates saying they have been feeding them normally.
He declined to divulge more details on the matter saying the facility is operating and run professionally.
The police institution has on several occassions come under scrutiny for gross human rights abuse, corruption and torture.
Last week Court ruled that 22 suspects arrested in connection with AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi murder should be compensated with shs 80m each for being tortured while in police custody.
Over the years, human rights organisations have severally ranked the Police as the biggest abuser of human rights in Uganda.
