Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has firmly dismissed speculation that she intends to run for president after her tenure, describing the claims as “absolute nonsense” and reiterating her plan to retire from active politics in 2031.
Among made the remarks on Monday during a visit to the Secretariat of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) in Kololo. She had gone to support preparations for the upcoming birthday run of First Son and Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
She was received by PLU official David Kabanda, as discussions around her political future continue to circulate both in political circles and on social media.
Addressing the speculation, Among was unequivocal:
“I have heard people making claims that I am interested in the presidency… that is absolute nonsense.”
She added that she has already achieved beyond her expectations in her current role and has no intention of seeking higher office.
“People are saying that Anita wants to stand for presidency in 2031. I want to tell Ugandans that even where I am, I have overachieved. I am saying, in 2031, I am retiring from active politics.”
Among emphasized that her focus remains on her responsibilities as Speaker, urging leaders and the public to concentrate on service delivery and legislative priorities rather than political distractions.
She also reaffirmed her loyalty to the ruling establishment, noting that she would support any candidate endorsed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“If my brother is standing or anybody else that the President supports, I will support. This talk that Anita wants to be president is total nonsense,” she said.
Her visit to the PLU Secretariat also highlighted her support for youth engagement and national unity initiatives tied to the upcoming run. Representing Bukedea Comprehensive School, where she serves as director, Among purchased 5,000 running kits to enable participation by students and the wider community.
She noted that the initiative aligns with the school’s mission of promoting patriotism, discipline, and youth development through sports.
Among further revealed that she will personally participate in the run scheduled for April 26, swapping her official attire for a tracksuit to join thousands of Ugandans expected to take part.
Kabanda welcomed her contribution, saying it significantly boosts the visibility and momentum of the event.
The Muhoozi Kainerugaba Birthday Run is expected to draw large crowds from across the country, blending celebration with a broader message of unity, fitness, and national cohesion.
