NRM candidate Dedan Mubangizi has taken an early lead in the ongoing vote recount for the Buwekula South parliamentary race, according to provisional figures emerging from the Mubende Magistrate’s Court.

As of the latest count, Mubangizi is leading with 5,091 votes, while independent candidate Fred Tumwesigye trails with 4,357 votes, reversing the outcome of the initially declared results.

The court-ordered recount began on Monday evening and stretched through the night under tight security, with judicial officers and Electoral Commission officials overseeing the exercise.

Counting is still ongoing, with several polling stations yet to be fully tallied.

The recount follows a successful application by Dedan Mubangizi, who petitioned court challenging Tumwesigye’s declaration as winner of the January 15 parliamentary election, citing alleged irregularities during tallying.

Court officials confirmed that the final winner will only be declared after the recount is fully concluded, cautioning that the figures released so far remain provisional and subject to change as counting progresses.

Earlier, the Electoral Commission had declared Tumwesigye winner with 8,804 votes, against Mubangizi’s 7,998, a margin that prompted the legal challenge.

The dramatic turnaround during the recount has heightened political tension in Buwekula South, where supporters from both camps have been camping at court awaiting the final outcome.

Security has been reinforced around the court premises to prevent disruptions as the sensitive process continues.

Buwekula South is one of several constituencies where 2026 election outcomes have been contested, but the unfolding recount has become one of the most closely watched due to its razor-thin margins and shifting vote figures.

The court is expected to announce the final results and officially declare the winner once the recount exercise is completed.
