Uganda is once again set to take center stage on the global diplomatic calendar as it prepares to host the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Midterm Ministerial Review Meeting from October 13th to 16th, 2025, at the Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The event follows Uganda’s successful hosting of the 19th NAM Heads of State and Government Summit in January 2024 and reaffirms the country’s growing reputation as a key player in international dialogue.
Held under the theme “Deepening Cooperation for Shared Global Affluence,” the Munyonyo meeting will bring together Ministers of Foreign Affairs from NAM Member States, alongside representatives from Observer Countries and Organizations, to review progress since the Kampala Summit and address emerging global challenges.
Focus Areas
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, preparations are already in advanced stages, with multiple government agencies working in coordination to ensure a smooth and secure event.
Delegates will discuss a range of issues affecting the developing world, including:
NAM’s continued relevance amid rising geopolitical tensions.
The ongoing Palestinian question and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with calls for relief efforts and implementation of UN Resolution ES-10/27 (June 12, 2025), which demands an end to the Gaza blockade and supports mediation by Egypt and Qatar.
The global drive to eradicate poverty under the UN 2030 Agenda, reaffirming commitments to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, Sevilla Commitment, and SDG 17.
Reform of global governance institutions such as the UN and international financial bodies to amplify the voice of the Global South.
Renewed advocacy for Africa’s fair representation on the UN Security Council, in line with the Ezulwini Consensus and Sirte Declaration.
Efforts to strengthen regional cooperation, industrialization, technology transfer, and job creation.
Preparations for the XX NAM Summit in Uzbekistan, focusing on regional stability and economic resilience.
The meeting will also recognize President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s leadership as NAM Chair, applauding his role in promoting peace, unity, and equitable development across the Global South.
Security and Logistics
Authorities have assured the public that logistical and security arrangements are in place. Controlled access and traffic diversions will be enforced around the Munyonyo area to ensure delegates’ safety and smooth movement.
“Uganda is proud to once again provide a platform for meaningful dialogue among developing nations,” a Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said. “This meeting reinforces our country’s pivotal role in promoting peace, multilateralism, and development across the Global South.”
Background
Formed in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement is the world’s largest coalition of states outside formal political or military blocs, currently comprising 120 Member States. Uganda assumed the Chairmanship of NAM in 2024, ushering in a new era of South-South cooperation under President Museveni’s stewardship.
The Munyonyo ministerial review is expected to produce key outcome documents that will guide NAM’s agenda and policy direction ahead of the next summit in Uzbekistan.
