The Deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police Luke Owoyesogire has provided critical details surrounding the death of Jacob Akansasira, a 40-year-old IT specialist formerly working at Red Pepper in Namanve, Mukono district.
At the time of his death, Jacob was working at Kyambogo University.
The tragic incident, recorded under Kira CRB 1108/2024, has been attributed to mob violence in Namugongo, Wakiso District.
According to Owoyesigire, Jacob has been staying with his family at a guest house in Kyebando till November 30, 2024.
On December 1, he left to buy milk but failed to return.
His wife, Catherine Kansiime, was later informed by a boda-boda rider, identified as Ainemabazi Chrispus, that Jacob had been attacked near the Namugongo Catholic Shrine.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that Jacob Akansasira was brutally assaulted by a mob in the Kigambo Ghetto area of Namugongo, after being mistaken for a thief,” stated the deputy spokesperson.
Following the attack, Akansasira was rushed to Angelina Medical Center and later transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he succumbed to severe brain injuries on December 11, 2024.
The police disclosed that two suspects have already been arrested in connection with the incident.
“We have apprehended two individuals, Ssebuliba Waiswa and Katerega Akra, who are currently assisting with investigations. Efforts to identify and arrest other suspects are ongoing,” Owoyesgire added.
“Further inquiries have revealed that Jacob had family disputes over inheritance and a history of alcohol abuse, which may have contributed to him ending up in Namugongo. His wife, Kansiime, was initially arrested due to family suspicions about her involvement but was later released on bond after no evidence was found linking her to the crime.”
The police condemned mob justice, urging the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands. “Mob action is not only illegal but also a gross violation of human rights. We are committed to ensuring those responsible for this heinous act face justice,” Owoyesigire emphasized.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police have called on the public to provide any additional information that may aid in bringing the perpetrators to book. Investigations into the incident remain active.
