In a significant announcement from the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has approved the promotion and confirmation of four key Division Commanders. The appointments underscore a continued effort to strengthen leadership within the UPDF and enhance its operational capacity.
The following officers have been elevated from Brigadier General to Acting Major General:
Brigadier General Stephen Mugerwa – Promoted to Acting Major General and appointed Commander of the 1st Infantry Division of the UPDF.
Brigadier General Paul Muhanguzi – Promoted to Acting Major General and confirmed as Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division.
Brigadier General Felix Busizori – Promoted to Acting Major General and appointed Commander of the 4th Infantry Division.
Brigadier General Keith Katungi – Promoted to Acting Major General and appointed Commander of the 5th Infantry Division.
These promotions come as part of a broader initiative to ensure capable leadership in strategic military divisions, which play a critical role in national security and regional stability. The newly promoted officers are expected to bring their extensive experience and commitment to their new roles, driving operational success and the UPDF’s mission to safeguard Uganda.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who assumed the role of Chief of Defence Forces earlier this year, has been lauded for prioritizing merit-based promotions and fostering professionalism within the UPDF. This latest round of promotions aligns with his vision of modernizing Uganda’s armed forces and ensuring that competent leaders are placed in key positions.
In a press release issued by the Department of Defence Public Information, Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye, the Director of Defence Public Information, extended congratulations to the newly promoted officers. “We congratulate the newly promoted general officers and wish them success in their assigned responsibilities,” the statement read.
The promotions come at a time when the UPDF is involved in multiple operations, both within Uganda and across the region. These new appointments are expected to further bolster the efficiency and strategic readiness of the UPDF.
The promotion of these four officers reflects the UPDF’s continued commitment to excellence and its adherence to a culture of discipline and meritocracy. It is anticipated that the new Major Generals will enhance the operational effectiveness of their divisions and contribute to the overall goals of national and regional stability.
As the UPDF continues to evolve under General Muhoozi’s leadership, these strategic promotions signal a forward-looking approach to strengthening the institution for the challenges of today and tomorrow.
