In a press conference on Tuesday, Chris Mukiza, Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), addressed the recent uproar regarding errors in the 2024 census results.
Despite facing increasing pressure for his resignation, Mukiza stood firm, asserting his credibility as Uganda’s leading statistician.
Mukiza openly acknowledged the mistakes present in the census report, characterizing such errors as common in statistical work. “Errors are human and are made every day,” he stated, urging critics to shift their focus from personal accountability to constructive discussions about the data.
Amidst the mounting public scrutiny, he expressed frustration at the personal attacks directed at him. “Everybody is on Mukiza’s neck. Why waste time on data? Why not say we want your neck?” he remarked, emphasizing that the census results will serve as the official data guiding national planning until the next census in 2034.
“Don’t expect any other census before 2034. This is the only one you’ll have. Whatever you want to quote, it will be this one,” he added.
The controversy surrounding the census primarily stems from misreported data affecting various ethnic and religious groups, particularly the Bakiga and Bagisu communities. Initial figures inaccurately attributed Bakiga data to the Bagisu, sparking outrage among affected populations.
Mukiza confirmed that this error had been corrected but acknowledged that dissatisfaction remained.
Critics have raised concerns about the overall credibility of the census, with many calling for increased accountability from UBOS. In response, Mukiza used the platform to reassure those calling for his resignation, stating,
“Despite the errors in the census report, I remain the best statistician in Uganda, and that will never be undisputed.”
He hinted at underlying personal motives driving the criticism against him, suggesting a broader agenda to undermine his leadership. “Enemies have been hunting me even before I became the ED,” he remarked.
As UBOS continues to pledge transparency and accuracy, the controversy surrounding the 2024 census results remains a contentious topic within various sectors of the public.
Mukiza’s steadfast defense of his leadership and the integrity of UBOS highlights the challenges faced by statistical bodies in the midst of scrutiny and public expectation.
Dr Mukiza used the platform to assure all those calling for his resignation that despite errors in the census report, he remains the best statistician in Uganda and that will never be undisputed.
