A yet to be known medical student from Kampala International University (KIU) has penned a deeply troubling suicide note addressed to the mother, expressing immense disappointment and frustration with the institution.
The note, which has surfaced online, has sparked widespread concern and calls for urgent reforms within the university. The student’s current status is unknown as there have been no official announcements regarding his well-being from the institution.
The student’s note reads:
“I am a medical student of Kampala International University (the worst medical school you can think about). I have made a decision to end my life as the only solution to all regrets, rejections, and problems I am facing. Decisions made in KIU have made me lose hope and I regret joining it. I have lost interest in all dreams I had in life. I joined medical school in KIU to make my mum proud, I have worked my best, I have been disciplined, and excelling student. KIU has constantly frustrated my dream. A course of 5 years takes a minimum of 7-10 years on normal progress. A disorganized medical school sends students to teaching sites, then it has told us to shift from referral hospitals to health centers Fours, midway the semester and parents have to foot the costs of these illegal decisions.
Mum I am not a crook, a liar, I am not a thief. This disorganized medical school has made me look a failure in front of you. I would have never wished you to abandon me at this moment, you are the reason I have been working hard. I joined the medical school to make you proud. Change our lives, put a smile on you as a Dr. But this disorganized institution has made me fail you in your old age. Mum after you abandoning me I have lost interest in everything. I see no reason to live. Take care of my siblings. I am sorry for what has happened.
MUM NEVER ADVISE ANY OTHER PARENT TO BRING THEIR CHILDREN TO KIU MEDICAL SCHOOL. IT’S A 7-10 YEAR MENTAL IMPRISONMENT.”
The student’s note highlights several grievances against KIU, including the disorganization of the medical program, the extended duration of the course, and the financial burdens placed on students and their families due to abrupt changes in teaching sites.
These issues, the writer suggests, contributed to the overwhelming sense of failure and despair.
The emergence of this note has prompted a wave of reactions, with many calling for a thorough investigation into the practices and policies at KIU.
As of now, KIU has yet to issue an official statement regarding the student’s note or current status. The university is expected to address the allegations and outline steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
This deeply concerning situation underscores the urgent need for mental health support within educational institutions and the importance of addressing systemic issues that can adversely affect students’ well-being.
