Kampala Metropolitan Police has confirmed the arrest of Ashraf Kiiza, the primary suspect in a harrowing incident captured in a viral social media video.

Kiiza was apprehended by the Flying Squad unit police officers after evading capture since the evening of May 13, 2024.

The video shows Kiiza raiding a mobile money shop, where he pulled out a panga and attempted to hack a client Sam Turyamuhak at Bashir Grain Millers in Natete Kutano who was depositing money.

Armed with a panga and hammer, Kiiza assaulted Mr. Turyamuhaki while demanding money.

According Police, Mr. Turyamuhaki is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.

Kiiza was located in Kyotera on May 15 and is now detained at Nateete Police Station.

Authorities confirm that further investigations are ongoing, and Kiiza will be prosecuted accordingly in the courts of law.

This incident is a stark reminder of the soaring crime rates in Uganda, particularly in urban areas like Kampala.

The rise in violent crimes and robberies has been attributed to the increasingly tough economic times the country is facing.

Uganda’s economy has been grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and economic instability, leading to desperation among certain segments of the population.

Urban areas, in particular, have seen a significant uptick in crime as more individuals turn to unlawful means to survive.

The arrest of Ashraf Kiiza provides a momentary reprieve for residents, but it also underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to tackle the root causes of crime.

Addressing economic hardships, increasing police presence, and community policing are essential steps toward restoring safety and security in Uganda’s urban centers.
