Uganda is gearing up to host the prestigious 22nd AfWASA International Congress and Exhibition (AfWASA CIE2025), organised by the African Water and Sanitation Association (AfWASA).
Set against the backdrop of the nation’s capital, Kampala, the event promises to be a beacon of collaboration and innovation in the global water sector. Scheduled to take place from February 16-20, 2025, at the renowned Speke Resort Convention Centre, Munyonyo, the congress is poised to attract water and sanitation professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders from around the world.
At the helm of this initiative is the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), an agency under the Ministry of Water and Environment. Dr. Silver Mugisha, the Managing Director of NWSC and President of AfWASA, expressed his enthusiasm for the congress, highlighting its theme: “Water and Sanitation for All: A Secure Future for Africa.” This theme underscores the imperative of ensuring universal access to clean water and sanitation facilities across the continent.
Dr. Mugisha emphasized the urgent need to address the water and sanitation challenges facing Africa. With millions still lacking access to safe water and proper sanitation, the congress serves as a platform for sharing experiences, exchanging ideas, and forging partnerships to drive meaningful change in the sector. He also announced the launch of the African Water and Sanitation Academy (AWASA), headquartered in Uganda. AWASA aims to be a center of excellence, nurturing the next generation of water and sanitation leaders and innovators across Africa.
The congress agenda will encompass a wide range of topics, including discussions on leadership, governance, and climate change adaptation strategies. Dr. Mugisha stressed the importance of bridging the gap between water practitioners and political leaders to secure the necessary funding and support for sector initiatives. He urged stakeholders to adopt a dynamic mindset to tackle emerging challenges effectively.
Hon. Sam Mangusho Cheptoris, the Minister of Water and Environment, echoed Dr. Mugisha’s sentiments, emphasizing Uganda’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) – ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all by 2030. He underscored the congress’s role in accelerating progress toward this goal through knowledge sharing and collaboration among experts.
Emmanuel Otiam Otala, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, emphasized the critical role of water in public health and agricultural productivity. He commended Dr. Mugisha for his leadership in connecting Uganda to the global water community and stressed the importance of prioritizing water sector funding to address pressing challenges.
As Uganda prepares to welcome delegates from across the globe, the 22nd AfWASA International Congress and Exhibition stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to advancing water and sanitation initiatives for a brighter, more sustainable future for Africa and beyond.
