Last month, Trevor Besigye a clearing agent based at Nakawa, in Kampala spent some time in Police custody over his participation in a gold robbery which took place in January on Entebbe road in Kajjansi, Wakiso district.
Trevor’s ordeal emanates from conning an American businessman identified as Lucas Roberts, a former marine soldier who had coughed $130000 for shipment of his 10 kilograms of gold.
According to information obtained by this investigative website, in January Lucas flew to Uganda to finalize a gold transaction after consulting a Kampala based a law firm which had sourced the seller and the transporter of the merchandise.
The whole transaction including buying, refining and shipping would cost the American around $1 million.
“He wanted a lot of Gold, over 100 kgs but he first started with 10kgs,” said our source.
After finalizing the purchase, Lucas was then introduced to UPLINE FREIGHT UGANDA LIMITED, a clearing and forwarding Nakawa based firm that would handle the shipment of 10 kilograms of gold.
This company is owned by Trevor Besigye, whom our investigations reveals agreed to manage the transportation of this gold from Kampala to Dubai at $130000 (around 472,000,000 UGX) to which the investor agreed.
Trevor was supposed to travel to Dubai to oversee the safety of the merchandise from where he would receive the balance on payment of $50000 upon arrival.
HEIST
On the fateful day, information indicates that Trevor who was in possession of the gold used the same car with the American on their way to Entebbe Airport.
Everything moved smoothly and as planned, in his mind Lucas couldn’t imagine that he was bound to leave Uganda empty handed with no gold which he had paid for.
Upon reaching Kajjansi, Trevor and Lucas were intercepted by a car which was occupied gunmen who immediately pulled out Trevor, put him in their vehicle and left the foreigner stranded on the road.
Trevor had left with the gold.
As if the earth was falling on this former marine soldier, Lucas composed himself as a highly trained military man, took his plane and left Uganda.
He would embark on research and investigation remotely to establish who was behind the robbery.
Equipped with information, Lucas travelled back in Uganda in around June and lodged his complaints in different security agencies.
Lucas would later learn that most of the security officials he had run to were compromised and investigations had been abandoned to shield the culprits.
Determined to get justice, Lucas lodged another complaint with Crime Intelligence (CI).
A couple of people were arrested including Trevor Besigye who confessed and relayed how the robbery was designed and executed.
He was detained at SID in Kireka before he was freed on bond after promising to return the loot.
“He had used part of the money to buy a posh Toyota Landcruiser which was impounded by Police. He agreed to sell it off to recover money to pay up the American,” a source said.
Contacted for a comment, Trevor didn’t deny he participated in the heist.
“I think that American hired a wrong person to represent him and so that is wea the problem came in from but first tell me wat ur end game is here coz I don’t want to get mixed up in situations
Already I was messed up by all parties involved and Police also,” reads Trevor’s unedited WhatsApp message.
