The UPDF establishment has in detention 6 of its commanders suspected to have participated in violent robberies, said the army publicist Brig Felix Kulayigye.
Kulayigye adds that the army is still hunting for more commanders in all sub- units where the robberies have happened around the country.
They will be prosecuted convicted and jailed to serve a sentence as decided by the Court Martial.
His revelation comes at a time incriminating evidence places Charles Olim alias Sipapa a city socialite to 12 scenes of aggravated robbery that occurred since 2014.
Sipapa is currently on remand in Luzira together with his wife. He is charged with theft of shs 1.6 billion.
In the past year, Mr Olim had been moving with UPDF guards, lived larger than life and alleged to be working for President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
“We are going to put all commanders to task to explain why this [robbery] is happening. The commanders of these sub-units have been called for questioning.”
He said UPDF and Local Defence Unit (LDU) soldiers involved in armed robberies will be jailed.
“We have arrested a number of them and they are going for trial. We have six officers under custody. We are going to improve the question of supervision of the command at all army barracks to stop their officers from participating in criminality,” he said.
“We are not going to reprimand any of the arrested officers but jail them because for us we don’t handle them with gloves. Those are criminals. Once they have been tried, convicted, and sentenced, they will serve the sentence in military detention, Kitalya prison, or any other detention facility depending on where the Court Martial will send them,” he further told The Observer.
President Museveni’s special advisor on security and defence Lt Gen Proscovia Nalweyiso last week didn’t have kind words for Sipapa.
She described him as a posturer who just used his pictures with the President to unleash terror, rob and infringe on the rights of Ugandans.
