Former Security Minister Gen Elly Tumwiine has Thursday morning passed on.
The NRA historical, according to a high ranking UPDF official breathed his last from Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he was airlifted two weeks ago.
Tumuwiine, had been battling cancer.
Last month Relatives and associates reported he collapsed at the marriage ceremony of a prominent female journalist, and was later booked at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala from where he was airlifted to Nairobi.
“The Ministry of Defence And Veteran Affairs and the UPDF fraternity regrets to announce the death of General Elly Tumwiine in Nairobi, a longtime member of the High Command and Army Council at 5:45am today,” the UPDF announced.
“We register our condolences with his family and the entire UPDF fraternity as well as all the Ugandans of good will.”
“Hon Gen Elly Tumwiine joined the resistance in 1979, trained as Officer Cadet at Monduli, was the one who fired the first shot at Kabamba on the 6th of February 1981 and has been part of the leadership in various capacities ever since.
He was injured at Bukomero and lost one eye. He has always been a dedicated and hard working cadre.
Burial arrangements will be announced later.
We will always remember his patriotic contribution to the revolution,” the brief statement ends.
